Break 100 – The No-BS Guide to Breaking 100 Consistently By GolfSpirations

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably asked one of these questions:

  • “Why can’t I break 100?”
  • “Why does one bad hole ruin my entire round?”
  • “Do I really need to buy a new driver—or is it me?”

Let’s make this simple. You don’t need new clubs. You don’t need a swing coach (yet). You need a smarter approach, a little discipline, and the right mindset.

Here’s the honest, no-BS guide to finally breaking 100—and doing it consistently.

⛳️ Step 1: Stop Trying to Play Like the Pros

The pros play a different game than you. Literally. They’ve got:

  • Swing coaches
  • Yardage books
  • Muscle memory from age 5

You? You’ve got a Sunday tee time, a bag full of chaos, and a dream.

So here’s the rule of thumb: stop going for those hero shots. Even though it feels incredible when you pull one off, they need to be executed perfectly and they are still probably a low percentage shot at this point.

While you're working on consistency, prioritize hitting smart shots within your capabilities. Eliminate big numbers and you’ll naturally start breaking 100—and beating your buddies.

🏋️ Step 2: Develop Confidence in a Core Set of Clubs

You don’t need to be Houdini with 14 clubs. You need a few you can trust.

Find your core clubs:

  • One club to tee off with...Driver, 3-wood, or hybrid (whatever you have the most confidence swinging)
  • A couple of irons for your fairway shots
  • One wedge you trust around the greens
  • The putter you have the best speed control with

Why? Fewer decisions = fewer mistakes. Confidence over versatility for now.  As you get more confident, you can become more versatile, but for now stick to your strengths and build from there as your scores come down.

🌿 Step 3: Keep Tee Shots in Play

You can't score consistently if you're re-teeing or hacking out of the woods on every hole.

  • If your driver is unreliable, do you have more confidence in your 3-wood or hybrid?
  • Prioritize staying in play over distance.
  • Think: 200 yards and in the fairway > 280 yards in the trees or out of play.

Remember: Fairway > Forest.  Every time.

🔺 Step 4: Aim for the Fat Part of the Green

You're not trying to hit it close. You're trying to hit the green and stay there.

  • Going for the pin leads to missed greens, short-sided chips, and big numbers.
  • Aim for the safe part of the green.

If you’re on the green without any penalty shots and two-putt, that’s a win.

💥 Step 5: Stop Blowing Up — Take Your Medicine

The key to breaking 100 is avoiding blow-up holes.  Avoid trying to hit shots that you can only pull off 1 in 10 times. We know this is hard, but try and refrain from hitting these shots until you're consistently breaking 100 or 90...consistency lowers scores.

When you’re in trouble:

  • Don’t try the miracle shot.
  • Punch out/lay up.
  • Chip on (Safe part of the green).
  • Two-putt.

A bogey or double is fine. Don’t let a low percentage hero shot turn the hole into an 8 or worse.

🧘 Step 6: Learn to Love 2-Putts

Everybody hates 3 putts, plus they kill your score.  Focus on lag putting and speed control:

  • Get your first putt within a 3-foot circle.
  • Make the next one—or have your buddies to give it to you.

Lag putting tip: Practice by putting to the edge of the fringe on the practice green before your round.  It helps you to focus solely on your speed.

✅ The Break-100 Checklist (Print This!)

Before each round:

☑️ Rely on your 4-6 most trusted clubs

☑️ Play each shot within your current capabilities

☑️ Avoid low % hero shots—especially from trouble lies

☑️ Stay in play off the tee

☑️ Aim for the fat part of the green

☑️ Practice your lag putting (speed > aim)

☑️ Take your medicine when in trouble

☑️ Laugh off the bad shots

☑️ Walk off proud—you'll be breaking 100 consistently in no time.

🎉 Finally: You’re Probably Closer Than You Think

You don’t need a perfect swing or new clubs—just a smarter approach and the right mindset.

Now get out there, enjoy the game, and start beating the course instead of yourself.
